Supracervical Hysterectomy

Dear Dr. N,  What is the difference between and Laparoscopic Hysterectomy and a Laparoscopic Supracervical Hysterectomy?   Wow, big words very confusing.  Signed, D.

Dear D:  Confusing indeed,  both involve “belly button” surgery to remove the uterus.  The Lap Hysterectomy removes the entire cervix and uterus through the vagina and Supracervical takes the top part off the uterus by ‘morcellating’ it or cutting it up and removing it through the umbilicus.  It is a slightly better recovery, the cervix stays and you can resume intercourse sooner.  It is best to talk over your needs with your surgeon and come up with the best plan for you.  Also, always discuss your ovaries.  You cannot be the only one that is confused.  Hope that helps!   DrN
